Russian Olive
A tough and attractive deciduous large shrub or small tree that can be successfully grown as a silver-leaved hedge. Elaeagnus angustifolia is prized for its narrow, willow-like leaves that are covered in silver scales, giving the whole plant a shimmering, metallic appearance. In early summer, it produces small, highly fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers, which are followed by edible, olive-like fruits that are silvery-orange when ripe. It is exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant, often used in difficult, exposed, or coastal sites where other plants struggle. It has a somewhat thorny habit, making it a good choice for a security hedge or windbreak. It grows well in almost any soil, including poor, sandy, or saline conditions, provided it is well-drained. It has an upright, spreading habit and can grow quite large if left unpruned, but it responds well to regular clipping. Its silver foliage provides a wonderful contrast to darker green plants and can help to brighten a landscape.
