Dalmatian Grassy Bellflower
A beautiful member of the bellflower family from the Balkan Peninsula, Edraianthus dalmaticus forms neat tufts of narrow, grass-like, deep green leaves. In early summer, it produces clusters of upward-facing, violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers held in terminal heads on short, leafy stems. Each flower cluster is surrounded by a ruff of hairy bracts, adding to its botanical interest. This species is an excellent choice for a sunny rock garden, trough, or scree bed in the UK. It requires very well-drained soil and a position in full sun to thrive and maintain its compact habit. Like many Balkan alpines, it is accustomed to hot summers and cold, dry winters, so protecting the crown from excessive winter moisture is beneficial. It is a charming and distinctive plant that provides a more structured look than some of its creeping relatives. It is hardy to H4/H5 and remains relatively low-maintenance once it has settled into a suitable spot.
