Golden scaled male fern 'Cristata'

A spectacular semi-evergreen fern that adds a regal presence to any woodland setting. 'Cristata' is a popular cultivar distinguished by its elegantly crested tips on both the pinnae and the fronds, giving it a dense, frilly appearance. In spring, the new fronds uncurl in a striking display, covered in golden-brown scales that catch the dappled sunlight. As they mature, the fronds turn a deep, rich green and can reach up to a metre in height, forming a magnificent shuttlecock shape. This fern is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in the UK, tolerating a wide range of conditions including drier shade once established, though it prefers moist, organic soil. It is a stalwart of the shade garden, providing architectural interest and a lush, leafy backdrop for spring-flowering bulbs and woodland perennials. It is particularly effective when planted in groups or as a specimen plant near water or at the base of large trees. It requires minimal care, only needing the old fronds removed in late winter.
