Suendermann's Mountain Avens
Dryas x suendermannii is a naturally occurring hybrid between D. octopetala and D. drummondii. It is a robust, prostrate, evergreen subshrub that forms extensive, ground-hugging mats of attractive, oak-like, dark green leaves with silvery undersides. In late spring and early summer, it produces charming, nodding, yellowish-white buds that open into upward-facing, creamy-white flowers with a prominent boss of yellow stamens. These are followed by highly ornamental, fluffy, silver-grey seed heads which persist for many weeks. In the UK garden, it is an excellent and very hardy (H7) groundcover for a rock garden or a large trough. It thrives in well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil in full sun. Once established, it is very long-lived and requires minimal care beyond an occasional trim to keep it within bounds. It is particularly effective at suppressing weeds and provides year-round interest through its foliage, flowers, and attractive seed heads.
