Mossy Whitlow Grass

Draba bruniifolia is an exquisite, cushion-forming alpine that is highly prized for its very early spring colour. It forms exceptionally tight, moss-like mounds or cushions of tiny, bright green, needle-like leaves that are evergreen. In very early spring, often in February or March in the UK, the foliage is almost completely hidden by a profusion of bright, sunshine-yellow four-petalled flowers held on short, thin stems. This early flowering makes it an invaluable plant for providing interest when the rest of the garden is still dormant. It is a slow-growing species and perfectly suited to the conditions of an alpine house or a well-protected trough or scree garden. It demands impeccable drainage and a position in full sun. While it is fully hardy in terms of temperature, its biggest threat in Britain is the damp winter; it is advisable to protect the cushion with a piece of glass or provide a very gritty mulch around the collar of the plant to prevent rot. It is a true gem for collectors of miniature alpines.
