Yellow fairy bells

Disporum flavens is a refined and elegant woodland perennial originating from Korea. It adds a touch of exotic grace to shaded UK gardens with its upright, arching stems that reach about 60cm-75cm. In late spring, lemon-yellow, tubular, bell-shaped flowers dangle from the leaf axils, providing a soft glow in dappled shade. These are followed by attractive blue-black berries in the autumn. The foliage is bright green, ovate, and remains fresh throughout the season. It is fully hardy in the UK (H5) and thrives in moist, organic-rich soil that mimics the forest floor. It is slower to spread than some other woodlanders, forming a neat, non-invasive clump over time. This plant is often confused with Uvularia, but Disporum flavens is more upright and robust. It pairs beautifully with blue-flowered woodland plants or variegated hostas, and its unique structure provides vertical interest in a low-growing spring border. It is relatively pest-free and easy to maintain.
