Evergreen Solomon 's seal Jockey's nightcap
A choice evergreen perennial that brings elegance and year-round structure to the woodland garden. Closely related to the common Solomon's Seal, Disporopsis pernyi features arching, dark green stems clothed in glossy, leathery, lance-shaped leaves. In early summer, small, pendant, lemon-scented white flowers with green markings hang from the leaf axils. These are often followed by dark purple berries. Native to China, it is perfectly suited to the UK's temperate climate, proving to be robust and fully hardy. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form an attractive, non-invasive clump. It is particularly valuable for its ability to maintain its lush appearance even in deep shade and throughout the winter months. It prefers a woodland soil that is rich in organic matter and stays consistently moist but not waterlogged. Pair it with finer-textured ferns or silver-leaved Pulmonarias for a classic and low-maintenance shade planting. It is generally resistant to the pests that often plague the common deciduous Solomon's Seal.
