China Pink 'Chianti'

Dianthus chinensis 'Chianti' is a stunning half-hardy annual (often treated as a biennial in milder areas) that adds a touch of luxury to the garden. The flowers are deeply fringed and come in an extraordinary shade of dark velvety maroon, edged with a fine, silver-white picotee rim. Reaching about 25-30cm in height, it has a neat, clump-forming habit and bluish-green foliage. In the UK, it is perfect for containers, window boxes, or the front of a sunny, well-drained border where its intricate patterns can be seen up close. Sowing should be done early in the year under glass to ensure flowering in the first season. Unlike many traditional pinks, 'Chianti' is not strongly scented, but its visual impact is unparalleled. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage a continuous display throughout the summer months. It prefers a position in full sun and soil that is neutral to slightly alkaline.
