Delphinium 'Cassius'
A member of the Elatum Group, 'Cassius' is a magnificent and regal perennial that epitomizes the traditional English summer border. It produces towering, densely packed spikes of semi-double, velvety deep-violet flowers with a contrasting dark 'eye' or bee at the centre. Reaching up to 1.5 to 1.8 metres in height, it creates powerful vertical accents and drama. Delphiniums require a sheltered position to protect the heavy flower spikes from wind, and they usually necessitate staking. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter and benefit from regular feeding. A thorough cutting back after the first flowering can often stimulate a second, smaller display in late summer. They are susceptible to slugs and snails when young, so protection is recommended in the spring. Despite the maintenance, the sheer impact of 'Cassius' in full bloom is arguably unmatched by any other garden perennial.
