Hardy Yellow Ice Plant

Delosperma nubigenum is one of the hardiest ice plants available for UK gardeners. It originates from the high mountains of South Africa, making it uniquely suited to cool, damp climates as long as the soil does not become waterlogged. It forms a dense, low-growing mat of succulent, cylindrical leaves that turn a striking reddish-bronze in winter. In late spring and early summer, the foliage is almost entirely obscured by a profusion of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that glitter in the sun. This plant is an exceptional choice for rock gardens, ground cover in sunny borders, or trailing over the edges of containers. It is highly efficient at suppressing weeds once established and requires virtually no pruning. Its ability to tolerate low temperatures (down to -15°C) makes it a reliable perennial for the British garden, provided it is situated in a position that catches as much winter sun as possible.
