Carrot 'Purple Sun'
'Purple Sun' is a striking F1 hybrid carrot that brings vibrant colour to the vegetable plot and the kitchen. Unlike some older purple varieties, this cultivar is purple right through to the core, maintaining its deep violet-black hue even after cooking. It is a 'Nantes' type carrot, producing cylindrical roots with blunt ends that have a crisp texture and a sweet, earthy flavour. They are exceptionally high in anthocyanin antioxidants. In the UK, these can be sown from March to July for harvests from July through to October. They require a stone-free, light, well-drained soil; heavy or stony ground will cause the roots to fork. To avoid the carrot fly, which is a common pest in British gardens, growers often use fine insect mesh or plant in raised beds. The feathery green foliage is decorative and robust. This variety performs best in a sunny position and should be thinned early to allow the roots enough space to reach their full potential size.
