Carrot 'Flyaway'
'Flyaway' is a specialized F1 hybrid carrot specifically bred for the UK market to combat the most common carrot pest: the carrot root fly. This variety contains low levels of chlorogenic acid, the substance that attracts the female fly to lay her eggs. While not 100% immune, it is significantly more resistant than traditional varieties, making it a game-changer for gardeners who struggle with maggot-damaged roots. It is a 'Nantes' type carrot, producing blunt-ended, cylindrical roots with a smooth skin and a deep orange colour. The flavour is exceptionally sweet and crisp. In Britain, it can be sown from April to July. Despite its resistance, it is still often grown under horticultural fleece for extra protection. It requires a light, well-drained soil that has not been recently manured. Thinning should be done on a still day to avoid releasing the carrot scent which might attract flies from afar. It is an excellent choice for organic gardeners looking to reduce pest problems naturally.
