Maincrop Carrot 'Autumn King 2'
Daucus carota 'Autumn King 2' is a quintessential late-season carrot, perfect for the British vegetable patch and renowned for its high yields of large, cylindrical roots. This cultivar belongs to the Flakkee group and is prized for its excellent deep orange colour and robust, sweet flavour. Unlike many smaller summer carrots, 'Autumn King 2' is bred to produce substantial roots that can reach up to 30cm in length, making it ideal for winter stews and roasting. It is particularly valued in the UK for its cold-hardiness; the roots can be left in the ground through the early winter frosts, which often helps to concentrate the sugars and enhance the sweetness. The foliage is lush and green, forming a dense canopy that helps suppress weeds. It requires stony-free, deeply dug soil to prevent the roots from fanging. Protection from carrot fly using fine mesh is recommended throughout the growing season.
