Tangutian Daphne
Daphne tangutica is an exquisite evergreen shrub that offers year-round interest and a powerful fragrance. It forms a dense, rounded mound of leathery, dark green leaves. In late spring, it produces clusters of terminal flowers that are rosy-purple on the outside and fade to white inside. These are often followed by attractive red berries in late summer, though they should not be eaten. It is well-suited to the UK climate, being hardy to H5, but it resents being moved once established, so careful site selection is essential. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil that stays moist but never waterlogged. While it can tolerate some shade, a sunny spot will result in better flowering. It is a slow-growing plant, making it perfect for borders or rock gardens where space might be limited. Minimal pruning is required, which is beneficial as Daphnes often react poorly to heavy cutting.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
