Spring Mezereon
Daphne mezereum, the Spring Mezereon, is a captivating deciduous shrub, though often listed with tubers due to its similar cultivation and early spring emergence. It is highly valued in UK gardens for its intensely fragrant, rose-purple (or sometimes white) flowers that appear directly on bare stems in late winter to early spring, before the leaves emerge. These blossoms are a vital early nectar source for pollinators. Following the flowers, clusters of bright red (or yellow) berries develop, adding ornamental interest through summer, though they are toxic. It prefers a cool, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, appreciating a sheltered spot. Fully hardy but resents disturbance once established.
