Rock Daphne

A rare and exquisite evergreen shrublet from the Muran Plateau in Slovakia, this is a highly prized plant for the alpine specialist. It forms a low, dense mound of narrow, dark green leathery leaves. In late spring, it produces terminal clusters of intensely fragrant, tubular pink flowers that can scent an entire corner of the garden. It is a slow-growing plant that requires patience and specific conditions to thrive in the UK. It demands a position in full sun but must have a cool, deep root run, often achieved by planting it next to a large rock or in a raised bed with plenty of buried stones. It is fully hardy (H5) but dislikes being moved once established due to its sensitive root system. Perfectly suited for a large trough or a prime spot in a scree garden, it represents the pinnacle of alpine shrub cultivation and rewards the gardener with its unparalleled perfume.
