Dahlia 'Hillcrest Royal'

A magnificent cactus-type dahlia that is a frequent winner on the UK exhibition circuit. 'Hillcrest Royal' produces large, striking blooms with vibrant, deep purple-magenta petals that are narrow and pointed, characteristic of the cactus class. The flowers are held proudly on exceptionally strong, dark stems, making them superb for cutting and vase displays. The plant has a robust, upright habit, typically reaching a height of 1.2 metres, so it requires firm staking to protect the heavy blooms from wind damage. To achieve exhibition-quality flowers, UK growers often disbud the side shoots, though it will produce a spectacular garden display if left to grow naturally. It requires a sunny site and plenty of organic matter. Tubers should be started into growth indoors in March or April before planting out in late May after the danger of frost has passed.
