Warminster Broom 'Allgold'

A very popular and floriferous deciduous shrub that brings vibrant colour to the UK garden in mid-spring. 'Allgold' is distinguished by its dense, arching green stems which are smothered in bright, butterfly-like, golden-yellow flowers. The fragrance is distinct, often described as pungent, and the floral display is incredibly dense, obscuring the tiny leaves. Growing to about 1.2 metres, it has a gracefully weeping habit that looks wonderful on banks or spilling over walls. It is fully hardy (H5) and thrives in any well-drained soil, including very poor or acidic conditions. A key requirement is full sun; without it, the plant will become spindly and flower poorly. To keep the plant vigorous and prevent it from becoming woody at the base, it should be pruned back by about two-thirds after flowering, taking care not to cut into old brown wood. It is a fantastic choice for adding early-season structure and brilliance to a Mediterranean-style planting scheme.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil; acid to neutral.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
