Globe Artichoke 'Violet de Provence'
A stately and architectural perennial vegetable, grown for its edible flower buds which are harvested before they open. Plants can reach an impressive ultimate height of 1.5-2 metres with a spread of 1 metre. The large, thistle-like leaves add a dramatic touch to the garden. 'Violet de Provence' is a popular cultivar known for its deep purple buds and good flavour. It is hardy in milder parts of the UK (H4) and benefits from winter protection in colder areas. Flowering occurs in summer if buds are left to mature, revealing large, violet-blue flowers attractive to bees. Full sun and rich, well-drained soil are ideal. An RHS AGM holder, this variety is a striking addition to both ornamental and vegetable gardens.
