Quince 'Serbian Gold'
Also known as 'Hemus', 'Serbian Gold' is a relatively recent introduction to the UK that is gaining rapid popularity due to its heavy crops and disease resistance, particularly against leaf blight. It produces large, pear-shaped fruits that turn a brilliant golden yellow when ripe. The flesh is fragrant and, like all quinces, requires cooking to bring out its deep pink colour and floral aroma. The tree is naturally compact and slow-growing, making it perfect for smaller gardens. It is also self-fertile and highly reliable. In late spring, it produces large, attractive pale pink flowers that are more reminiscent of wild roses than typical fruit blossom. It is fully hardy (H5) but requires a warm, sunny site to ensure the fruit ripens sufficiently. The fruits are excellent for jellies, membrillo, or adding to apple pies for extra depth of flavour.
