Quince 'Leskovac'
'Leskovac' is a Serbian variety of quince that is highly regarded for its large, apple-shaped fruits and robust health. It is particularly well-suited to the UK climate, often proving more resilient than some of the more common cultivars. The fruits are exceptionally large, often weighing over 500g, with a bright yellow skin when ripe and an intense, intoxicating fragrance that can fill a room. The flesh is firm and requires cooking, after which it turns a beautiful deep pink and releases a sweet, aromatic flavour perfect for jellies, membrillo, or adding to apple pies. In spring, the tree is highly ornamental, producing large, pale pink to white blossoms against attractive grey-green foliage. It has a vigorous, spreading habit and is generally more resistant to leaf blight than other varieties. It thrives in a moist but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. While self-fertile, it will crop more heavily with a pollination partner nearby, providing a spectacular autumn harvest.
