Quince 'Isfahan'
'Isfahan' is an Iranian quince variety that is gaining popularity in the UK for its relatively early ripening and high-quality fruit. It produces large, bright yellow, pear-shaped fruits that are intensely aromatic, filling a room with a sweet perfume when brought indoors. Unlike some quinces, 'Isfahan' starts cropping at a young age. The tree has an attractive, somewhat irregular growth habit and large, fuzzy leaves that turn a lovely yellow in autumn. In late spring, it produces large, pale pink to white blossoms that are highly ornamental and usually late enough to escape frost damage. The fruit is ready for harvest in October and is excellent for making quince jelly, membrillo, or for adding to apple pies for extra fragrance. It is self-fertile and prefers a sunny, sheltered spot with moisture-retentive soil. It is very hardy but needs sun to ripen the wood.
