Pumpkin/Squash 'Rouge Vif dEtampes'
Commonly known as the 'Cinderella Carriage' pumpkin, 'Rouge Vif d'Etampes' is a stunning French heritage variety that grows beautifully in the southern and central UK. It produces large, deeply ribbed, flattened fruits with a vibrant burnt-orange to red skin. Internally, the flesh is thick and orange, possessing a mild, sweet flavour that is perfect for soups and pies. The plant has a vigorous, trailing habit, with vines that can easily extend to 3 or 4 metres. It requires significant space and a very fertile soil, ideally enriched with plenty of well-rotted manure. In the UK, it should be started indoors in April and moved outside in late May. While it is tender (H2), the fruits can be harvested in autumn and will store for several months if cured in the sun. This variety is as ornamental as it is edible, making it a spectacular feature in a large kitchen garden or allotment. It is particularly valued for its high yields and historical charm.
