Japanese Cedar 'Bandai-sugi'

Cryptomeria japonica 'Bandai-sugi' is a distinctive dwarf cultivar of the Japanese Cedar, forming a compact, irregular, broad mound or small, gnarled shrub. Its unique charm comes from its combination of juvenile and adult foliage; it produces both short, stiff, awl-shaped needles and denser, scale-like growth, often tinged with bronzy-purple in winter. It grows slowly, typically reaching 1-1.5m in height and spread over many years, making it suitable for rock gardens, containers, or Japanese-style gardens. It thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun to partial shade, sheltered from strong, cold winds. 'Bandai-sugi' offers year-round texture and a unique, somewhat ancient character to the garden.
