Broad-leaved Cockspur Thorn 'Splendens'

Often regarded as one of the best small garden trees for multi-seasonal interest, this hawthorn hybrid is exceptionally tough and reliable. It forms a dense, rounded crown of glossy, dark green leaves that are broader than the common hawthorn. In late spring, it is smothered in clusters of white flowers which are followed by large, bright red berries (haws) that persist well into winter, providing forage for birds. The autumn display is particularly spectacular, with the foliage turning vivid shades of orange, copper, and fiery red. It is fully hardy (H7) and tolerates exposed or coastal sites, as well as urban pollution. While it does possess some sharp thorns, its compact size (growing to about 5-6 metres) and year-round beauty make it a staple of UK horticulture. It grows well in almost any soil type, provided there is reasonable drainage, and benefits from a sunny position to maximise its autumn colour and fruit production.
