Broad-leaved Cockspur Thorn 'Prunifolia'
Crataegus persimilis 'Prunifolia' is a highly regarded, small deciduous tree that offers triple-season interest. It has a neat, rounded, and compact habit, making it ideal for smaller gardens or urban settings. The foliage consists of broad, glossy, dark-green leaves that turn spectacular shades of orange and copper in autumn. In late spring, it produces clusters of white flowers typical of the hawthorn family, which are followed by large, bright red, jewel-like berries (haws) that often persist well into the winter. Be aware that it does possess long, sharp thorns. It is exceptionally hardy (H7) and very resilient, tolerating wind, pollution, and a variety of soil types, including clay. For the best fruit production and autumn colour, it should be planted in full sun. This tree is an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, providing food and nesting sites for birds, and is also robust enough for use as a boundary specimen on exposed sites.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Any well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
Flowering: May, Jun.
