Propeller Plant
The Propeller Plant is an extraordinary succulent from South Africa, named for its overlapping, sickle-shaped leaves that are arranged in opposite pairs, resembling airplane propellers. The foliage has a soft, grey-green, velvety texture due to a coating of fine hairs. In mid to late summer, it produces one of the most spectacular floral displays of any succulent: large, flat-topped clusters of tiny, intensely scarlet-red flowers that are lightly scented. This plant is a fantastic choice for a sunny windowsill or a heated greenhouse in the UK, as it is tender (H2). It can grow up to 60cm tall, though it often remains smaller in containers. It requires a very well-drained potting medium and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. After flowering, the flower spike should be removed to maintain the plant's shape. Its unique foliage and brilliant blooms make it a favourite among succulent collectors.
