Tiger Jade
A miniature gem, Crassula exilis subsp. picturata is a delightful succulent that forms dense, low-growing mats of tiny rosettes. The leaves are pointed, light green, and beautifully mottled with dark purple-maroon spots, with the undersides often being a deep purple. This spectacular marking gives it a very decorative appearance even when not in flower. In late summer, it produces delicate clusters of tiny, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers on short stems. In the UK, it is most successful when grown as an indoor plant or in a frost-free greenhouse (rated H2). Due to its mat-forming nature, it looks wonderful in wide, shallow bowls or as a 'filler' in larger succulent arrangements. It requires a very free-draining, gritty compost and a position in bright light to maintain its compact growth and vivid leaf markings. Watering should be infrequent, following the 'soak and dry' method, and reduced significantly during the winter months.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Gritty, well-drained potting mix.
Hardiness: H2 — down to 1°C.
Flowering: Aug, Sep.
