Greater Sea Kale
Crambe cordifolia is a magnificent architectural perennial that demands space but rewards with an incredible floral display. It produces huge, deeply-lobed, dark green leaves that can grow up to 60cm across, forming a substantial mound. In early summer, it sends up massive, airy, cloud-like panicles of thousands of tiny, fragrant white flowers on branching stems that can reach over 2 metres in height. The overall effect is like a giant, ethereal version of Gypsophila. Due to its sheer size, it is best suited as a specimen plant or at the back of a large border. It is fully hardy and thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. It requires deep soil to accommodate its long taproot and prefers not to be moved once established. In the UK, it is a dramatic addition to any garden, providing both striking foliage and a breathtaking, honey-scented floral spectacle that bees love.
