Brass Buttons 'Platts Black'
Cotula squalida 'Platt's Black' is a striking and unusual ground cover that is highly effective for adding dark, dramatic texture to a garden. It features tiny, fern-like foliage that is a deep, smoky bronze-purple, almost appearing black in certain lights. It forms a dense, creeping mat that is tough enough to withstand occasional light foot traffic, making it an excellent choice for planting between paving stones or as a lawn substitute in small, low-traffic areas. In mid-summer, it produces small, yellowish button-like flowers, though these are secondary to the fantastic foliage. In the UK climate, it prefers a moist but well-drained soil; it can struggle in very dry, sun-baked positions but thrives in partial shade where the soil remains cool. It is fully hardy and spreads via underground runners, but it is slow-growing enough to stay within its allotted space. The dark foliage provides an incredible backdrop for silver-leaved plants or bright green companions like mosses and ferns.
