Clematis 'Rooguchi'

'Rooguchi' is an exquisite and distinctive Clematis belonging to the Integrifolia group, known for its elegant, nodding, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms are a deep, velvety indigo-purple with recurved tepals, appearing continuously from early summer through to the first frosts of autumn. Unlike many climbing Clematis, it is semi-scandent or non-clinging, meaning it requires support like a trellis or can be allowed to scramble charmingly through neighbouring shrubs or roses. It is particularly valued in UK gardens for its long flowering period and its relative resistance to Clematis wilt. Growing to about 2 metres, it is ideal for smaller spaces or large containers. It is fully hardy (H6) and prefers its 'head' in the sun while its 'feet' (roots) remain cool and shaded. Pruning should be hard (Group 3) in late winter to encourage vigorous new growth. Its darkest purple tones provide a stunning contrast against silver foliage or white-flowered companions.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist but well-drained loam.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
