New Zealand Clematis
Clematis marmoraria is a unique, dwarf evergreen climber (or more accurately, a sprawling sub-shrub) native to New Zealand. It is the smallest species of Clematis, typically growing only to about 30cm in height, but it can be trained to 'climb' through low-growing shrubs or over rocks. It features deeply cut, parsley-like, dark green leathery leaves. In spring, it is smothered in beautiful, saucer-shaped white flowers with attractive yellow centres. In the UK, it is best grown in a rock garden, a raised bed, or an alpine house where its drainage can be strictly controlled. It is hardy to about -5°C (H3), so it may require protection in cold winters or in northern regions. It is an excellent choice for a container where its delicate features can be appreciated at eye level. It requires very gritty, sharp-draining soil and a sunny, sheltered position. It is slow-growing and requires no regular pruning.

Soil: Very well-drained, gritty soil.
