Late Large-flowered Clematis 'Gipsy Queen'

A classic and reliable late-flowering clematis that has been a staple of UK gardens since the late 19th century. This Group 3 climber is prized for its velvet-textured, deep violet-purple flowers, which are highlighted by contrasting reddish-maroon anthers. The flowers are typically 10-15cm across and appear in great profusion from mid-summer until the first frosts. It is a vigorous grower, capable of reaching 3.5 metres, making it perfect for growing through large shrubs, over pergolas, or up sunny walls. Being a Group 3 variety, it should be hard-pruned to about 30cm above ground level in late winter. It is fully hardy across the UK and performs best in full sun or partial shade with its 'roots in the shade and head in the sun.' It is particularly effective when planted alongside silver-foliaged plants or pale yellow climbing roses, where its dark blooms can truly stand out.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Alkaline to neutral, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct.
