Rock Rose
This charming evergreen shrub is a natural hybrid from Greece, offering a more delicate appearance than many of its coarser relatives. It forms a low, spreading mound of narrow, grey-green leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. From early to mid-summer, it is smothered in a profusion of small, pale pink, saucer-shaped flowers with golden centres. Each bloom may only last a day, but they are produced in such abundance that the display is continuous for weeks. It is particularly well-suited to coastal gardens in the UK due to its high salt tolerance and ability to withstand buffeting winds. It requires a position in full sun and very well-drained soil; it will struggle in heavy, waterlogged clay. While generally hardy to H4, it appreciates the shelter of a warm wall in colder northern districts. Maintenance is minimal, requiring only a light trim after flowering to maintain a neat shape.
