Rock Rose
Cistus x skanbergii is a charming, naturally occurring hybrid originating from Greece, prized for being one of the most delicate-looking but resilient members of the rock rose family. It forms a dense, spreading mound of narrow, Sage-like, grey-green leaves. In early summer, it is covered in a multitude of small, clear pale-pink flowers with yellow centres. Unlike some other Cistus, the pink of 'skanbergii' is soft and subtle, making it easy to incorporate into various garden colour schemes. Growing to about 60-90cm in height, it is an excellent choice for ground cover on dry banks or for adding a Mediterranean feel to the front of a border. It is particularly noted for its high tolerance of heat and drought. In the UK, it requires a south-facing, sunny position with free-draining soil. While hardy, it appreciates protection from the most severe winter winds. It requires virtually no pruning but can be lightly tipped to keep it neat.
