Sage-leaved Rock Rose 'Prostratus'

A low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub that is perfect for groundcover in a hot, dry spot. 'Prostratus' features crinkled, sage-like, dark green leaves that form a dense mat. In late spring and early summer, it is covered with a spectacular display of saucer-shaped white flowers, each with a bright yellow centre. Despite the delicate appearance of the blooms, this is a tough and resilient plant. It is particularly useful for covering banks, walls, or as a weed-suppressing front-of-border plant. It is rated H4 and is generally hardy in most of the UK if planted in a sheltered, sunny position with excellent drainage. Like all Cistus, it is very drought-tolerant and thrives in poor soils. It requires little maintenance; a light trim after flowering will help maintain its shape, but avoid cutting into old wood. Its sprawling habit makes it an excellent choice for a Mediterranean-style rockery or coastal garden.
