Cloud Forest Bamboo

Chusquea gigantea, aptly named Cloud Forest Bamboo, is a truly magnificent, clump-forming bamboo, renowned for its towering, thick, solid culms that can reach impressive heights. It forms a dense, upright, non-invasive clump, making it a grand architectural statement in UK gardens. This species can achieve an ultimate height of 6-10 metres (sometimes more) with a spread of 2-4 metres, requiring ample space. It is relatively hardy, rated H4, tolerating temperatures down to -10°C, benefiting from a sheltered position in colder areas. 'Gigantea' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Flowering is very rare and can lead to the death of the plant. Its imposing size and majestic culms make it ideal for large gardens as a spectacular specimen or screen.
