White-Flowered Bamboo
Chusquea culeou, the White-Flowered Bamboo, is a magnificent clump-forming bamboo renowned for its incredibly solid, upright culms that emerge green, covered in a waxy, white bloom, maturing to a striking yellow. These impressive, thick canes provide exceptional architectural interest. Reaching 4-6 metres in the UK, it forms a dense, upright clump that makes a superb specimen plant or an imposing screen. It is hardy (H5) but benefits from a sheltered position, protected from very cold, drying winds, and thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Unusually for bamboo, it produces small, white, inconspicuous flowers on drooping spikes. Its dramatic culms and elegant form make it a prized plant for a prominent position in a large garden.
