Red Tussock Grass Jointed Sedge
This magnificent evergreen grass from New Zealand is a showstopper in the UK garden, particularly during the winter months. It forms large, graceful tussocks of very fine, arching foliage that possesses a distinct coppery-red to bronzed hue year-round. The leaves are incredibly slender and can grow up to a metre in length, creating a fountain-like effect that moves beautifully in the wind. In summer, it produces slender, nodding flower panicles that add to its elegant silhouette. It is surprisingly hardy for a southern hemisphere grass, provided it is not sitting in winter wet. It prefers a sunny or lightly shaded position and thrives in soils that are acidic to neutral and remain reasonably moist. It is an excellent choice for a contemporary or coastal garden where its dramatic colour and texture can be fully appreciated. It is slow-growing and long-lived, eventually forming a significant architectural presence. Maintenance is minimal, only requiring a light combing to remove loose dead leaves.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, acidic to neutral loam.
Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.
Flowering: Jul, Aug.
