Fat Stalk Bamboo

Chimonobambusa tumidissinoda, known as Fat Stalk Bamboo, is an exotic and distinctive running bamboo, highly prized for its uniquely swollen internodes on the culms, resembling beads or knuckles. These green culms mature to develop a beautiful purplish hue and create an intriguing textural effect. Reaching 3-5 metres, it forms an open, elegant clump with delicate, fern-like foliage. While it is a runner, its spread can be controlled with root barriers. It is moderately hardy (H4-H5) and prefers a sheltered position in partial shade with moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil, protected from strong winds. Flowering is rare. This bamboo makes a fascinating specimen plant, drawing attention to its unusual culm structure, and adds a touch of oriental charm to the garden.
