Yellow-Groove Square Bamboo 'Yellow Groove'

A fascinating architectural curiosity, this cultivar of the Square Stemmed Bamboo features culms that are noticeably square or rectangular in cross-section—a feature that can be physically felt by running one's hand down the cane. In 'Yellow Groove', the sulcus (the flat part of the internode) is highlighted with a yellow stripe against the green culm. It has a very upright, stately habit and produces attractive, cascading foliage. It is a running bamboo that thrives in the temperate, damp climate of the UK, being particularly well-suited to western regions. It is moderately hardy (H4), so in colder inland areas, it should be placed in a very sheltered spot or a walled garden. It prefers moist, rich soil and partial shade. It is an excellent choice for a unique privacy screen or a standout focal point in a contemporary oriental-themed garden.

Sun: Partial shade.

Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.
