Marble Bamboo
This unique bamboo is named for the marbled pattern on its young culm sheaths. It is a relatively low-growing runner, usually reaching 1.5 to 2 metres, but it is exceptionally dense. A standout feature is that the stems often turn a rich, purplish-black as they mature, especially when exposed to plenty of light. The leaves are small and very numerous, creating a 'cloud' of green. It is a vigorous runner, so it should be used where a dense, low thicket is desired or contained with a barrier. One of the best features for the UK gardener is its late-season interest; it often produces new shoots in late summer or autumn. It is hardy (H5) but appreciates protection from the coldest winds. It makes an excellent, unusual low hedge or a striking container plant. It performs well in both sun and shade, though the cane colour is better in sun.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
