Large-Leaved Marble Bamboo 'Intermedia'
This cultivar is a more robust and slightly larger-leaved version of the Marbled Bamboo. It is particularly noted for its decorative culm sheaths which are creamy-white with marbled brown spots, persisting on the canes for some time to provide a unique 'dalmatian' effect. The culms themselves are relatively slender and turn a dark, mahogany green as they age. It has a running habit but is less aggressive in the UK than many Phyllostachys species. It is a fantastic choice for a medium-height screen or as part of a lush, oriental planting scheme. It is moderately hardy (H4) and thrives in the milder, wetter parts of the UK. It prefers a sheltered, partially shaded position to protect its attractive foliage from wind damage and sun scorch. Moist, fertile soil is essential for it to look its best. It is often used in container planting in sheltered courtyards where its marbled stems can be enjoyed at eye level.
