Large-Leaf Marbled Bamboo
This is an unusual and highly decorative bamboo prized for its distinct appearance. It features relatively large, lush green leaves and culms that often display marbled or spotted patterns, especially as they age. It has a somewhat open, spreading habit, typically growing to about 2-3 metres in height. It is a runner, so it requires management in a garden setting. One of its most appealing features is that it produces its new shoots in the autumn, providing interest at a time when many other plants are going dormant. It is moderately hardy (H4) and is best suited to the southern half of the UK or sheltered urban gardens. It thrives in partial shade and needs a moist, sheltered spot, as it is particularly sensitive to cold, drying winds. It makes a wonderful specimen in a tropical-themed garden or near water where its reflections can be enjoyed. Its architectural form is very distinctive.
