Lamb's Tail
Chiastophyllum oppositifolium is a unique and charming evergreen perennial that offers a distinctive look for the shade garden. It forms clusters of fleshy, succulent-like, bright green leaves with scalloped edges. In early summer, it produces architectural, arching stems of small, bright yellow flowers that hang down like tassels or 'lamb's tails', creating a graceful weeping effect. This plant is a fantastic choice for a shady rockery, a dry stone wall, or for planting in the cracks of north-facing masonry where few other things will grow. It is native to the Caucasus but has adapted well to the UK's cool, damp climate. While it prefers some moisture, it is surprisingly tolerant of drier shade once established. It is fully hardy and provides year-round interest with its succulent foliage. It is best grown in a site where its drooping flowers can be admired from below or at eye level, such as on a ledge or in a hanging basket.
