Dwarf Hinoki Cypress
Chamaecyparis obtusa is an elegant conifer adored for its rich, dark green, fan-like sprays of foliage and characteristic shell-like branchlets, creating a refined, dense mounded or broadly conical shrub. Many cultivars exist, but the species itself offers a graceful appearance. It typically reaches an ultimate height of 5-10 metres with a spread of 3-6 metres, though it is slow-growing. This cypress thrives in partial shade to full sun and prefers moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soils. It is fully hardy, rated H7 by the RHS, and benefits from a sheltered position, particularly when young, to protect its foliage from harsh winds. This conifer provides excellent year-round texture and structure, making it a sophisticated addition to borders, rockeries, or Japanese-style gardens.
