Chinese Redbud 'Avondale'
A spectacular and more compact relative of the Judas Tree, 'Avondale' is perhaps the most prolific flowerer of all the Cercis. In early spring, every inch of the bare stems and branches is smothered in tiny, deep purple-pink, pea-like flowers, creating a truly sensational display. The leaves follow the flowers and are large, glossy, and heart-shaped, emerging a tinged bronze and maturing to a rich green. It typically grows as a large shrub or a very small, multi-stemmed tree, rarely exceeding 3-4 metres, making it perfect for even the smallest of gardens or a large patio container. It is hardy (H5) but, like all redbuds, it requires a warm, sunny, and sheltered position to ensure the wood ripens properly for a good floral display the following year. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and does not like to be moved once established due to its deep taproot. A real 'wow-factor' plant for a spring garden.
