Silk Floss Tree

The Silk Floss Tree, Ceiba speciosa, is an exotic and stunning deciduous tree, though often grown in the UK in conservatories or as a patio plant, only tolerating very mild, sheltered coastal regions outdoors. Its most remarkable feature is its trunk, which is studded with large, conical thorns, giving it a unique, somewhat menacing appearance. In late autumn, it produces spectacular, large, showy pink-purple, funnel-shaped flowers, often before the leaves emerge. These are followed by large, woody seed pods containing silk-cotton floss. While a challenging outdoor plant in much of the UK, its dramatic form and vibrant flowers make it a truly exceptional specimen for warmer microclimates or protected environments.
