Purple-leaved Indian Bean Tree 'Purpurea'

Catalpa x erubescens 'Purpurea' is a striking medium-sized deciduous tree. Its most notable feature is its large, heart-shaped leaves which emerge a very dark, almost black-purple in late spring. As summer progresses, the leaves gradually fade to a dark green, but the petioles and stems retain their dark hue. In mid-to-late summer, it produces spectacular upright panicles of bell-shaped white flowers, tinged with purple and yellow markings, which are followed by long, bean-like seed pods that hang from the branches. It is hardy to H6 but is late to come into leaf, making it useful for avoiding late spring frosts. It prefers a sunny, sheltered spot to protect its large leaves from wind damage and thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. This tree is an excellent focal point for a lawn or large border, offering a tropical appearance and a unique colour palette that changes throughout the season. It can also be 'pollarded' annually to produce even larger, more dramatic purple leaves.
