Sweet Chestnut
A majestic, long-lived deciduous tree, the sweet chestnut is known for its deeply furrowed bark, large, serrated leaves, and edible nuts. Its glossy, dark green leaves are prominent throughout summer, turning warm yellow in autumn. In mid-summer, long, creamy-yellow male catkins provide a striking display and a distinctive scent, followed by spiky green cases containing the edible chestnuts. It is hardy throughout the UK, preferring deep, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils and full sun. A magnificent specimen tree for large gardens or parkland, offering both beauty and bounty.
